BUENA VISTA CAMPUS REPORT | PASTOR CHARLIE
What a tremendous honor it is to share life with you. I want to thank you for allowing me the privilege of being your Campus Pastor, as well as your Lead Pastor here at Cornerstone. I could not be more excited with where we are as a campus. 2021 proved to be a great year of growth and restoration. BV you stayed present and advanced His Kingdom in the midst of a very difficult season. You stayed present in honor and demonstrated a life rooted in hope. Your resolve, rootedness, kindness, faithfulness and willingness to stay present is nothing short of amazing. Thank you for your heart for His Kingdom and Cornerstone Church. Thank you for the sabbatical that allowed me a space to heal and prepare for the best second half of ministry in life. I want to thank Hope Vogel, David Schnieter, and Chris Tanner for their service as your Deacons in 2021. I want to thank the elders of our church in the BV Campus, March Crawford and Sandra Trojanovich for their faithful leadership in not only leading our church but our campus.
Children’s Church:
First, I want to thank Chrissy Drake, Vicki Wood, Michelle Schnieter, Brenda Craig, Heidi Coley, and Jeff & Megan Bates for their faithfulness to our children. Our children’s ministry is exciting and growing.
We had a banner year with new families and new babies in our children’s ministry.
Side note: Our children’s church kiddos asked if they could remain in the sanctuary for worship. They preferred worshiping with the adults of our church than the worship set aside for them. Good folks, I want to commission you to worship in extravagance. May it be said of us that our children learned extravagant praise and adoring worship through the parents and adults of their church family. What and HONOR!!
Worship & AVL:
Kaitlyn Stoumbaugh, Megan Bates, Kristina Tanner, Robbie Craig, John Bellantonio, David Schneiter, Jeremiah Sage, and Dave Trojanovich, I want to thank you all for your service in helping us provide an atmosphere of worship and bringing heaven to earth.
I could not be more excited for the willingness of so many to step up and step into the privilege of bringing heaven to earth. I look forward to being led by you all as you usher us into his presence, forever changing the Spiritual culture of our lives.
Ushers/Greeters:
What can I say about this team! To Don & Sandra Trojanovich, Janna & Robert O’Donnell, Heidi Coley, and Dave & Patty Trojanovich, plus our security team (their names will be unmentioned for security reasons ?) thank you for carrying the lion’s share of this ministry. You as a church do such an amazing job of welcoming people. It is fun to watch the lobby fill up with coffee and conversation. You see those who walk through our doors well. Well done BV Campus, well done.
Looking forward:
What I hope for in 2022 is that we will build “His House”. What a high calling to be ambassadors for God as He makes His appeal through us. I pray we continue to grow in our Sunday family feast. I pray that we come hungry to know God and the power of His resurrection. That we continue to hold unswervingly to the faith we profess, for He who called us is faithful. I pray that we reach out to one another as we embrace life groups in our homes. My hope is that we would embrace life, one to another, that we have been invited into through the Holy Spirit. I also pray that we embrace a life of discipline that grows our inner house, the temple of the Holy Spirit. May we grow in word and deed, that people may see a life lived for the glory and honor of the Father.
LEADVILLE CAMPUS REPORT | PASTOR JASON
What a year this has been! Personally, for me and my family, and for our Leadville Cornerstone family, this has been a year filled with challenges and beautiful demonstrations of God’s goodness and power. The biggest thing our family experienced took place on August 13th when our 15-year-old son Josiah, broke his neck in a biking accident. As you can imagine, this was extremely scary for our family as we were unsure what the outcome would be. However, after a week in Children’s Hospital and a fusion surgery, followed by a second back surgery three weeks later to correct his scoliosis, Josiah has made a complete recovery and is now back to all his normal sports and activities. As a family this was one of the hardest challenges we have faced, but we were blown away by the love and support we received from our church family and friends! We also experienced the goodness and power of Jesus in very tangible ways as Josiah made his full recovery. It was a true delight hearing Josiah share on Testimony Sunday about how God has used this accident to draw him closer and deeper into his relationship with Jesus!
In our ever-changing culture, our Leadville campus has also faced the challenges that COVID has presented. We have tried to remain compassionate and balanced in a time where people have very different ideas and opinions. It deeply saddens me that a few people have chosen to move on due to different perspectives, but we are greatly blessed by the many new families and individuals who are now calling Cornerstone home. Our prayer is that we can be a place of hope and blessing to our community during these unique times.
In the summer of 2021, Pastor Charlie took a well-deserved, four month sabbatical. While this is not specific to the Leadville Campus, I was impressed with the grace that our campus, and all the Cornerstone campuses, extended in receiving guest preachers almost every week. I also want to thank our elders who led extremely well and even took part in the preaching rotation. One of the many beautiful benefits of the Cornerstone vision is that we truly are a family expressed in different communities, and when one person needs time away, we can work together to make that happen! However, it is great to have our Lead Pastor back.
2021 Highlights from our Leadville Campus:
Youth Ministry:
- This year our youth ministry has grown to around 30 students regularly attending every Monday night. Students are learning what it means to love and be loved by Jesus and are having a blast hanging out together.
- In June, 37 of us went out to Eagle Sky Camp in Missouri for a life-changing week of camp!
- This fall we began a ministry called Spilled Soda at the Lake County High School. Every Tuesday from 11:30-1:30 a group of us go to the school and discuss with students a question of the day (Is there a God, how do you determine right from wrong, what gives you hope….). Students who come chat get a free soda. In a typical week 60-70 students are being seen and heard. We have had many opportunities to share the love of Jesus with students who are very Biblically illiterate.
Small Groups:
- This year we ran Alpha in the spring which is always great!
- Brooke S. led a women’s study that was well attended and greatly enjoyed.
- In fall, we went through a series called Freedom In Christ that powerfully helped people understand the Biblical truths that break many of the enemy’s strongholds over our lives.
- Just before Christmas our campus started a Celebrate Recovery Group.
Outreach:
- Over the past year we have had many people from Cornerstone partner with St. George Episcopal Church in helping provide food to our community. Some have helped weekly at the food pantry while others have served at the monthly Food Bank of the Rockies distribution.
- We had a wonderful end of summer community celebration! We had bouncy houses, ice cream and even the fire department showed up and let the kids spray everyone down with water (myself included). Many from our church family and the community came together for a fun afternoon!
- I have enjoyed serving as a volunteer chaplain at the Leadville Lake County Fire Department. It has truly been a privilege to get to know and support the men and women serving our community.
Sunday Morning:
- We are extremely grateful to our talented worship leaders and the teams that support them each week (including our dedicated AVL team)! We truly are led into the presence of God each week.
- Our deacons are doing a wonderful job, faithfully meeting the needs of our church family.
- We have a wonderful children’s ministry team, loving and teaching our children every week!
- Kimber is the best administrative person on the planet!
The Leadville campus currently feels expectant. We expect to encounter the presence of God through worship and the Word. I am very excited to see what God has for us in the year ahead! There have been challenges, as there always will be, but God is faithful, and He has big plans for this small city!
SALIDA CAMPUS REPORT | PASTOR CHARLIE
What a tremendous honor it is to share life with you. I want to thank you for allowing me the privilege of being your Campus Pastor, as well as your Lead Pastor here at Cornerstone. I could not be more excited with where we are as a campus. 2021 proved to be a great year of growth. Our Salida Campus grew in every facet of ministry. I want to thank our deacons, Christy Murphy, Rod Carpenter, Ross Kontz, and Marv Freeman, for their faithful service to our Salida Campus. Thank you also to Church Murphy, an elder of our church, for his leadership and faithfulness in serving and loving on our Salida Campus, plus Cornerstone as a whole. I also want to say thank you for allowing me a sabbatical. Salida, you did nothing short of honor me, my family, and your church family as you stayed present in a very difficult season. Ross Kontz, thank you for stepping in as an instrument of the Holy Spirit to declare the good news of Christ in this season.
Children’s Church:
First, I want to thank Theresa Freeman, Marlene Freeman, Debbie Sebring, Heather Sebring, Mike Davis, Luke & Caitlyn Treat, Clint & Courtney Shields, and Nancy Carpenter for all they do to minister to our kids from nursery to 11 yrs old.
We had a banner year with new families and new babies – our children’s ministry tripled! In 2022, we will be adding our discovery ministry for ages 3-5.
Yvonne Gleason, Bonnie Swanson, Ross Kontz, Mike Davis, Bob Gleason, and Courtney Schlollian make our worship amazing. I want to thank you all for your service in helping us provide an atmosphere of worship and bringing heaven to earth.
I would invite those of you who have a heart for worship to contact Yvonne about the possibility of helping our worship team grow. Yvonne has led us well for years. We welcome those who have a heart to worship through their instrument or voice. We are also in need of a few folks to serve with our AVL team – helping with slides and audio.
Ushers/Greeters:
Our Salida Campus shows up in this area! A special thank you to Mike & Kristen Smith, Chuck & Christy Murphy, Mark & Theresa Freeman for carrying the lion’s share of this ministry. You are all so good at making people feel right at home. It is a joy for me to watch Mike & Kristen standing at their post while I watch 20 others gather around them and welcome folks. You all truly have a heart for hospitality.
Looking forward:

SUMMIT COUNTY CAMPUS REPORT | PASTOR MATTHEW
In 2021 we, as a church, faced lingering challenges, and new struggles; celebrated rest and recovery while hearing the clamoring of excitement growing in each of our campuses. And through it all, we have seen God’s faithful hand at work. Psalm 46 reminds us that not only is God our protection but He is our source of strength when the road gets rocky. God is resolute in his promises, and those promises are still for us today as reflected in each campus on Testimony Sunday. What an amazing way to start this new year by reflecting on the faithfulness of God seen in 2021. The good folks in our Summit County Campus begin 2021 with expectant hearts, looking forward to what God had in store for us in spite of the persistent turmoil we were facing as a church.
At the January Annual Business Meeting, Summit County voted in two new deacons expanding our deacon board from three to five. This truly was a blessing. Two more voices meant two more perspectives as our deacon board consistently sought to answer Pastor Charlie’s infamous question, “What is the business of Cornerstone, and how is business?” We brought January to a close on the 31st with a Cornerstone Cares Day prayer walk through downtown Dillon and Silverthorne. We used specific scriptures to guide our hearts and prayers as we continue to believe for God’s word to echo through the streets of our community.
February was a month of transition. The lease for the space we had used for our Sunday services was coming to an end by the close of February. This month was a busy time of packing and moving things into storage in our Fairplay building. This was a bittersweet time as we said goodbye to what we knew and embraced a new season where we would be sharing a space with another local church in our community. This was a financial blessing from God for both our church and this other local body of believers. Fortunately for us, this move wasn’t very far, the space we shared was in the same mall where we had been meeting. We simply moved down the hall.
After serving Cornerstone for nearly 22 years as Lead Pastor, Charlie went on a much-needed and deserved sabbatical in April. This was the beginning of four months of rest, and relaxation; dreaming, and prayer for the future of our church. As Pastor Jason and I rotated through the other campuses preaching the word, Summit County was blessed to hear the voices of missionaries Zak and Lisa Wilkinson (who Cornerstone supports monthly), elders Dick McClain and Dave Horning, even the voice of our Creative Director, Jillian McElhattan on Sunday mornings. We have never felt more like one church than during this time. I had many that shared what an encouraging time it was to hear from Pastor Jason and the Elders along with the others.
In June, two students from our campus, Tallie and Shaylah Nelson joined the rest of our youth at the Eagle Sky Campground in Missouri for a life-changing week. When they returned I asked both of them what their favorite part was at youth camp and both of them said it was the evening service. While they enjoyed the many games, playing on the lake, and even the worship each night, what they loved the most was the teaching. They enjoyed the small group time where their small group leader took those nightly teachings and helped translate them into practical
application. The stories of how each student grew in their relationship with God over that week are amazing, and they can’t wait to go back again this year.
In August, all four campuses came together for a Sunday service at the River Park Pavilion in Buena Vista to welcome Pastor Charlie back from his Sabbatical. This was a great day worshipping together as one church and enjoying good food and fellowship afterward. August also offered our campuses another 5th Sunday Cornerstone Cares Day. For the second year in a row, the Summit campus partnered with the Blue River Watershed Group for a river cleanup day. Our campus and several other people from Summit County came together as a group to clean up a one-mile section of the Blue River north of Silverthorne. Alec Bradley, from our Summit Campus, got his picture in the BRWG newsletter (pic. courtesy of Misty Shell). This is one of our favorite events each year. It is a
great opportunity to partner with local people in a common cause, and while the cause might be
great the opportunity for us to connect with other locals is even better. This is an event we will be a part of annually.
As school went back in session our campus begin to plan for our Halloween Trunk-or-Treat event. This is the first time our Summit Campus has been able to participate in this event. The
event coincided with our last 5th Sunday Cornerstone Cares event for the year. Instead of hosting this event in a parking lot out of the trunks of cars, we were able to host this event in a neighborhood park. Katie and Keaton Morrison spearheaded this event and partnered with other families in the neighborhood to set up games for kids to play for candy. At one point during this event, I estimated that there were around 150 people enjoying the games, food, and conversation. Our campus set up a table and offered coffee, hot chocolate, and hot dogs. It was a hit. We even had Ted Lasso stop by for a hot chocolate and a hot dog.
We finished the year like every other celebrating family and friends around the holidays. As we turned our focus towards thankfulness, and the Christmas decorations began to shine and carols ring out we were reminded once more what an amazing gift we have been given, the gift of Jesus. Our Candlelight Christmas Eve Service was really special for me this year because I was actually in the Summit Campus celebrating Jesus with those I see every Sunday. A winter storm had blown in and the conditions outside kept our numbers inside lower. But as we gathered around the Advent wreath, candles lit, singing Silent Night I was reminded of how beautiful this family, this community we call Cornerstone is. And how lucky I am to call this church home.
Our Core Beliefs
The Bible is inspired by God and infallible (2 Timothy 3:15-16)
God exists forever and is 3 in 1—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Deuteronomy 6:4, Matthew 28:19, Mark 12:29)

Salvation is through the blood of Jesus (1 John 5:10, Romans 10:13-15)
Baptism is an outward expression of our faith and testifies of our changed lives (Matthew 28:19)
Jesus heals (Isaiah 53:4, Matthew 8:16-17, James 5:13-14)
Holy Spirit indwells every believer (Romans 8:15-18, Ephesians 1:13-14)
Holy Spirit sanctifies believers (Hebrews 12:14, 1 Peter 1:15-16)
In the baptism of Holy Spirit, giving gifts to the church in order to carry out the mission of Jesus to the world (Acts 2:4, Acts 10:44-46, Acts 15:8-9, Acts 19:1-9, Romans 12:1-8, 1 Corinthians 12:7-11)
Jesus is coming again (Acts 24:15, Luke 14:14, Revelation 19:7-9)
Vision
Bringing heaven to earth, impacting the culture of our communities.
Mission
Cornerstone Church exists to extend the Kingdom of God to rural communities by establishing vibrant, worshiping campuses.
Sacred Values
The two things we hold of most value is that our church family would be ever growing in their enjoyment of God and enjoyment of community.
Enjoying God includes: Knowing the extravagant love of the Father, understanding and living in our true identity in Christ, and living life in the power of Holy Spirit.
Enjoying Community includes: Practicing hospitality, participating in extravagant praise and adoring worship, living life together, and reaching out to our neighbors and our world through lifestyle evangelism.
